2nd Grade Guided Reading Lesson Plan

Guided Reading Lesson Plan

Text Title: Fantastic Planet
Level: Guided Reading J, DRA 18, Lexile 380
Nonfiction

Introduction

  • Students will already be grouped into guided reading groups according to their DRA levels.
  • I will call a group to the table.
    • "Reading Group 2, please come to the table."
  • Introduce comparative suffixes to students.
    • "We know what a suffix is, right? Who can explain what that is? Who can give me an example?" (allow students to discuss)
    • "Very good! Well today, we are going to learn about comparative suffixes. What does it mean when we compare something?" (pause for student responses)
    • "Exactly! Comparative suffixes are like -er and -est. Like, 'Seth is the fastest boy in our class.' Today, we are focusing on the -est suffix, so listen for that in our book."
    • "Let's play a game to practice those words!"
      • Phonics Focus: (CC): CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.D Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
      • Word Work Activity: Jump Shot
(words: hottest, coldest, highest, deepest, largest, smallest, driest, strongest, longest)

Before Reading

  • Pass out a copy of the book Fantastic Planet to each student.
  • Introduce the book.
    • "This book is called Fantastic Planet and it’s about the most extreme locations on Earth. Let's read the first page to find out what types of places we will be learning about."
  • Ask students to listen and watch for the -est ending.
    • "As we read today, I want everyone to be on the look-out for words ending in -est. There are a lot in this book, so make sure you're listening and following along extra carefully!"
    • "Snap your fingers every time you hear a word ending in -est."
    • "Let's practice as we read the first page again."

During Reading

  • Students will take turns reading one page of the book at a time.
    • "Anna, will you start us off? We will go around the table and read one page each. Don't forget to follow along when it is not your turn to read aloud."
  • Comprehension non-fiction
    • "So, what kind of text is this that we're reading?" (pause for student responses)
    • "Wow, so what did the book say the highest waterfall is called? (pause for student responses first) You may look back on page 6 to help you remember."

    • "What do you think is different about the hottest and coldest places on Earth?" (pause for student responses)
  • Fluency and phrasing
    • "Don't forget to read with inflection! We're not robots, remember!"
  • Word decoding
    • "Wow, guys, there are some really tough words in this book. How can we read or understand them if we've never seen them before?" (pause for student responses; elaborate when needed)
    • "Why don't we look at the picture on page 15 to give us a clue about what a coral reef might be?" (allow students to speculate)

    • "If we have time, we will play a game with all the vocabulary we just learned in this book!"
      • Vocabulary Focus: Features of the Earth
      • Word Work Activity: Scatter

(words: wind, waterfall, desert, island, lake, coral reef, river, volcano, cave, canyon, continent, ocean)

After Reading

  • Discuss
    • "Okay, who thinks they learned about a pretty cool place on Earth today?" (allow students to raise hands, no discussion necessary)
    • "Did anyone learn about a place they might want to go?" (pause for student responses)
    • "How about a place you would definitely not want to go?" (pause for student responses)
  • Writing Activity
    • "I need everyone to pick out a page in the book about a place you either really want to go, or definitely do not want to go to." (pause for students to find the page; some of them may need help)
    • Scaffolding: "Let's flag that page with a sticky note. On your sticky note, write:
      1. The name of the place (pause for students to write)
      2. They type of feature it is (pause for students to write)
      3. One fact about it (pause for students to write)
      4. Why you do/do not want to go there (pause for students to write)."
    • "We are going to write a paragraph about that place. You will give some facts about it and then tell why you would or would not want to visit it."
    • "Don't forget to use the book to help you spell words correctly. And remember, we capitalize words at the beginning of sentences and names of places."
